Introducing “The Happy Illustrator”

Course_Square_CharacterSigned

Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been developing more content ideal for teaching and speaking publicly as I intend on expanding beyond being ‘just a designer’.

Well in prepping my next training on personal branding,

I kinda

sorta

somewhat

changed my entire approach with my own personal brand because I wasn’t using mine in the best possible way.

And if I was to teach it, I better be living it.

WHAT IS A PERSONAL BRAND?

It’s the picture of you painted with your unique skills, talents and expertise. Plus, it has a lot to do with how you present and display these skills, such as your mannerisms, language, style of fashion, etc. In other words it’s the description others will have of you when you’re no longer in the room.

WHY BOTHER HAVING A PERSONAL BRAND?

Well, believe it or not, we all already have one. (It may not be the one you want, but you have one.)

Your personal brand is one of the best marketing tools you naturally possess because there’s only one you. And with more and more people coming online to do business, having a personal brand will most likely become a necessity in order to be REMEMBERED (branded).

For me, regardless of what I do or offer, people constantly refer back to my illustrations. I get approached online almost daily about them. I’m tagged in posts, sent email inquiries, DM’s, you name it!

Because of this, I know wholeheartedly that my gift in illustration is the one asset that sets me a part from everyone else. It is the gift that’s literally making room for me. Good thing I actually like illustrating or I’d be fighting with God and we all know that’s a losing battle. Also, it’s the one thing that comes naturally to me whereas everything else I can and want to do takes a lot of work and energy.

So instead of trying to build my personal brand the hard way. I’m going to embrace what comes naturally to me and work towards being known as ‘The Happy Illustrator’.

It’s easy to remember.

Describes me to a tee.

And, still alludes to what I can do for others.

WHAT ABOUT YOU? (This is not a rhetorical question, I really want to know!)

  1. What’s the one thing people constantly ask you about?
  2. What’s the one thing people seem to purchase from you over and over again?
  3. What’s the one skill you have that comes easy to you?
  4. What’s the one personal attribute that will help stand out from your competition?
  5. And what’s the one thing you want to be remembered for?

God designed us all unique and that’s where you start when it comes to building your personal brand.

Instagram Branding Challenge

FacebookAds_Horizontal_InstagramBrandingChallenge

I quit my job late last year and a major reason was because I’ve been leveraging social media to bring in passive income.

If you’ve been scratching your heads on how to do the same AND you have some sort of product based business or side hustle then I highly recommend leveraging the FREE social media phone app Instagram.

Yes, there are other social media sites & apps but Instagram takes the cake for me. So I’ve put together everything I know about it and created an easy to follow course that’ll deliver to your inbox over a span of 3 weeks.

If you’re new to Instagram and/or can’t seem to get it to work for you then consider my course: Instagram Branding Challenge

It’s Time to Raise the Bar

We all want the success, exposure and multiple commas in our bank accounts.

But before we can have a business that shines, we must make sure our business is worth supporting.

  • How is your time consciousness?
  • Do you truly value your customers & their input?
  • Are your products & services worth your prices?
  • Can you be trusted to deliver as promised?

Enough is enough. It’s time to be excellent! It’s time to stop making excuses.

Let’s raise the bar in our business by SERVING others in order to see the results we’ve been hoping for.

Here is the video I recorded on this very topic:

Are You Ready?

Hey there!

Wanted to share some exciting news with you and leave some hopefully helpful biz tips from a lesson learned…

The Exciting News:
My brand The DynaSmiles by DNT is listed as #47 of 82 brands to shop with this holiday season in an article on Essence.com! You can read the article here!

Essence is probably (don’t quote me but I’m pretty sure) the most recognizable magazine in the world targeting women of color. So this is pretty awesome when you run a small business.

Essence

In this amazing experience I realized 3 important things:

  1. Say Yes to Press
Being in a noteworthy publication is a huge credibility booster and a great marketing strategy for any business. Just think, I can now (and forever) say I was featured in Essence. So when the opportunity to be featured in the press in a positive light comes your way, grab it by the horns!
  2. Always Be Ready
I was contacted by someone on Essence’s staff out of the blue. Totally by surprise! To make matters even more interesting, I was given a six hour window to respond with a write up on my company, a high quality photograph of my product, legal proof of my business and more or else they’d move on to the next brand. Because of Essence’s reach, I’m sure they had hundreds of brands to choose from. What if I wasn’t ready? What if I said give me a minute? …Always be ready!
  3. It’s Who You Know
Essence contacted me because I was recommended by one of my past clients. This person thought of me enough to mention my name and for that I’m truly grateful. I had no idea this person had such a connection and so I was reminded that we never know who in our circle is holding our blessing. That’s why it pays to be kind and respectful to everyone, especially to the people we serve. You’re in business to serve others so serve them well!

Simplicity Still Works

You probably know me for my illustration work (see The DynaSmiles) as that’s what I share the most online. Today I thought I’d share a glimpse of my other contributions in the world of visual branding for one of my corporate clients and leave a quick branding tip.

McBride Laboratory is the owner of the hair care line Design Essentials whose product is sold pretty much everywhere. I did some print ad work for them that recently ran in Essence magazine. Corporate clients love clean, professional, and did I say clean design. If that’s the level of business you’re trying to get to then remember that less is more when putting your branding together. Not because that’s what’s been done, but rather, because that’s what works.

With this assignment, I was given strict guidelines to adhere to as they wanted me to stay within their branding initiative for this product launch. I had to keep things simple, clear and appealing as that’s what works for this particular brand.

Your take away… Busy, bright and all in your face design is not for everyone. Sometimes keeping things simple is the best thing.
